What's up. Right now I'm stationed in Iraq. But when I get home, I'm buying an H3. I've been scoping the net trying to find exactly what I want. So I thought I's ask you guys about does and don'ts for things to look for when purchasing an H3. I have every intention of doing a lot of wheeling with my H3 when I get home! Plus I'm moving to Alaska when I get back, so I'll have a bada$$ playground to explore. I'm not sure if I want an the Alpha or a I-5 model. Does the I-5 make adequate power to move the 4700lb truck? How does the gas milage compare between the Alpha V8 and the I-5? Does the I-5 match better with a manual or automatic trans?

I would probably recommend the Alpha due to the increased elevation and terrain in Alaska. The fuel mileage should only be about a mile or 2 difference between the 2. The H3 does have some undercarriage protection, but I would STRONGLY recommend to pay the extra money and purchase the real full undercarriage protection. 35" tires will fit on the H3's without a lift, but you will have some rubbing while turning. By the way welcome to the forum. What branch of the Military are you in? Thanks for the service.

I have an 06 H3 with the Manual Tranny and Adv. Package and I love it. I also have 35" Toyo MT's on mine (with the leveling kit) and it moves along OK. Its no racehorse, but it looks mean and handles any trail in Moab, Utah better than any Jeep I have seen. I would agree that extra HD skid plates would be a good choice.

If you ever hit the trails with Auggie you might want to consider FULL side panel protection. LOL Sorry, I couldn't resist Auggie.

Question about the electronic traction control. Is it based on the same system the H1 uses? I'm pretty sure the H1 had a system that would take the power from the wheels spinning and send the power to to the wheels with traction. Where as you could, break torque the truck to get all four wheels grabbing hard. Any body know anything about this? And I've seen pics of the 4X4 control center. What is the difference between the three settings. I know the truck is full time 4x4. Another question. GM owns Hummer now and I think it was GM that creatd the H2 and H3. So, how much are the H2 and H3 actually crafted and designed by Hummer? THanks, I greatly appreciate the intell. I can't wait to get back to get my H3.

Not sure about some of your questions, but the three buttons are: 4-hi (all the time) open rear; 4-hi, locked rear; and 4-lo, locked rear. I would get some rock sliders, either the GM version or Rocky Road. I haven't got the undercarriage protection yet, but it's on the list. If you get the I-5, you can do a few things to it to get it a little more lively, but if you put 35's on it, it get's a little doggie again. If the V8 had a 5 speed option, I would get that in a heart beat. Will you be towing anything? That might put you in the Alpha range. Welcome to the site and thanks for your efforts over there!

I don't own anything to be towed. But I'm sure here or there I'll tow a boat or a small trailer. I want the V8, but I don't want the leather or auto trans.

I didn't want the leather either, but I've come to like it. And the lack of a 5 speed with the Alpha is the only thing that has stopped me from trading up.

No, it's an option on the Lux, and Alpha Package and it is standard on the Adventure package. If you do a 2009 model you have the option for front and rear lockers.
