While running the winch  on our trucks it takes a big drain on the battery. I also run lots of off road lights at night so my question is it better to add a second battery or put on a bigger altenater on or both?  The battery now only last about a year before it is shot.

I would do both and on the second battery I would run the Optima deep cycle battery and the primary battery the regular Optima battery.

I have had great luck with the Optima batteries over the years on other vehicles and tractors.  I wish they made one for my 4 wheelers.

I found this site that has some good products for second battery. http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/html/isolators.htm

I like this setup because it keeps the factory setup in place. Wire and all that is included. The small unit price is $299.00, you will need to call for the larger unit.

The 2 units are identical, however they have different contact set current ratings. The larger unit is fully encapsulated and is capable of handling currents in excess of 400 amps - ideal for winching and jump starting applications. The smaller unit is sealed in a cast alluminium housing and is rated to 180amps. This unit is ideal for all applications where winching or jump starting is not required.

They have some mounts too.

No problem! The other thing I like about it is that if the Isolater goes bad, your still in business just with our your accessories. I would look at a spare Isolater as well Auggie.
