I bought a set of tactical rims that didn't have the tps units.  I bought 8 of the tps units off ebay (they came as packs of four and were cheaper than buying 5 individual ones).  The local 4x4 guy I'm using to mount the 35" Xterrains has not dealt with tps units before.  Is there anything special he needs to do or can he treat them as normal valve stems?  I also have read there is a procedure for setting the tps units so the truck sees them and it's in the owners manual.  Is there anything special I need to know about that?
Thanks!

You can reuse the tpm's from your old wheels or he can install the new ones on your new wheels make sure they are the tpm's for the H3 and not for the Yukon or other GM vehicles.  Your local dealer can reset them for you or you can do it yourself.  Your tire guy should have a tool to reset the monitors.

The tpm's for the H3 is a hard valve stem and the other ones are a soft valve stem.

I suggest taking care when installing the sensors. They breke easilyif the bead rolls over onto the sensor. I tend to install the tire firs and before seating the bead, feeding it in to install it. Here's the programing routine:

Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
    Apply the parking brake.
Turn the exterior lamp switch from OFF to parking lamps 4 times within 4 seconds. A double horn chirp will sound and the low tire pressure indicator will begin to flash indicating the learn mode has been enabled.
Starting with the left front tire, learn the tire pressure using one of the following methods:

    •
Hold the antenna of the J-46079 against the tire sidewall close to the wheel rim at the valve stem location then press and release the activate button and wait for a horn chirp.
Caution: Over inflating tires may cause personal injury or damage to the tires and wheels. When increasing tire pressure do not exceed the maximum inflation pressure as noted on the tire sidewall.

    •
Increase/decrease the tire pressure for 8-10 seconds then wait for a horn chirp. The horn chirp may occur before or up to 30 seconds after the 8-10 second pressure increase/decrease time period has been reached.
After the horn chirp has sounded, repeat step 4 for the remaining 3 sensors in the following order:

    5.1.
    Right front

    5.2.
    Right rear

    5.3.
    Left rear
After the LR sensor has been learned, a horn chirp will sound indicating all sensors have been learned.
Turn OFF the ignition to exit the learn mode.
After the learn mode has been exited, adjust all tires to the recommended pressures. Refer to Vehicle Certification, Tire Placard, Anti-Theft, and Service Parts ID Label .

Thanks for the procedure junkie.  I have the same question as Dennis:  What's that tool?  And is Step 4 the inflating/deflating part?

The guy that's doing the tires is just a local guy that is not very high tech, and he's already told me he has never dealt with a tps system before, so we'll see.  I'll pass along your suggestions.

The TPS units are supposed to be for a H3.  The ear-looking thing is green and the stems are metal.

The tires are the Xterrains, they are the directional tires.  I can't wait to get them.  Hopefully by the end of the week.

Thanks!

It's describing two ways to do it. I suggest the inflate/deflate method cause the tool is expensive. Just skip the "tool" paragraph.

Do you think I can fit my 5 adventure rims/tires inside the truck for the ride back to my house?

I had a tire warranty replaced last weekend at the dealership.

When I got home, there was a "Serv TPM" message flashing.

My thought is that the dealership didn't connect/install something properly, and I'm a little pissed that I have to go back.  They claim that it couldn't be because of anything they did.

Thoughts?

If there was no probelm before you pulled in there and there was a problem when you left...  They probably replaced the TPM sensor in that tire and didn't re-learn the sensors.  Did you notice if the light was on when you were leaving the dealer, or did it come on once you got home?

Check your tire pressures first. If there are more than one tire low, that light will come on. If they are set to the tire pressures stated on the door jamb sticker then it's possible a rookie replaced that tire and broke the sensor.

Got the new tires on!  The guy I took it to just hired a guy last week that knows a bunch.  He had no problem with the sensors and we only had to do the sensor learn twice (to slow the first time, I guess).  The new tires and the tactical rims on my all black truck look awesome.  I'll try and get a pic up in the next couple of days.  Thanks for the help!
