I'm looking at a 2003 H2 as first time Hummer owner and would like to know other owners thoughts on performingmaintenance and repairs themselves. Does the Hummer lend itself to this? I have always performed my own repairs (some rather major) on my 98 Volvo 5cyl turbo and an older model Jeep Wrangler. Any advice would be appreciated!

I bought my 2003 H2 when they first came out. Not counting the semi that took out the back end and the lady who sideswiped me, I have only had 2 problems. The starter went out shortly after I floated it in mud on an off road event, and just recently I have had the "check engine" light come on (also due to the mud bath). Auggie Mathis (Ron Carter sales supervisor) took care of things for me. Auggie also arranged for the fluids (transmission, differentials & transfer case) to be changed or flushed. I do all the oil & filter changes and lubribations. When we go wheeling, I rotate the tires and remove the side rails myself. (Air compressors & pneumatic tools rock!) Basically, I haven't had to work on it in almost 5 years of HUMMER ownership. As for other cars, I've changes about half a dozen water pumps & brakes, dozens of belts & hoses, and other various odds & ends with my mechanic brother's help. My H2 is the best vehicle I've ever owned! Dan Lubecki (AKA Bookem)

I think you would be making the right choice! all Vortech and LSx based GM motors are easy to work on. You will find majority of the engine components will swap with other LSX base motors as well. ie the 5.3L head can fit on the 6.0L block, etc... That makes most of the bolt on components interchageable. Basically, since the H2 is so big, you have lots of room to make mods or just basic repairs! J

Thanks for the info Justin. I went out this weekend and looked under the hood and saw allot of familiar equipment. And yes, there is allot of ROOM - although you have to almost climb into the engine compartment to reach it! JRSMITH1027
