Is this for real? is it possible that the hummer may be no longer?? GM closing 4 plants, may stop making Hummers CEO Rick Wagoner said today before the automaker's annual meeting in Delaware the plants to be idled are in Oshawa, Ontario; Moraine, Ohio; Janesville, Wis.; and Toluca, Mexico. He also said the iconic Hummer brand will be reviewed and potentially sold or revamped. On the Hummer, Wagoner said GM is "undertaking a strategic review of the Hummer brand, to determine its fit with GM's evolving product portfolio" in light of changing market conditions. "At this point, we are considering all options for the Hummer brand... everything from a complete revamp of the product lineup to partial or complete sale of the brand," he said. Detroit's automakers have been making the shift to more fuel-efficient vehicles, but not at the pace that matches consumers' drive to hybrids and high mileage models made overseas. Gas prices have accelerated the retreat from trucks and sport utility vehicles, leaving the Big Three at the most critical crossroads in 30 years. full article below http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5815728.html

They have not officially announced the end of HUMMER! They are going to do a study to see were they can restructure the brand. It is unfortunate that the name HUMMER brings in bad press and bad stereotypes. It will be interesting to see where all of this goes. But to restate HUMMER is not dead! What people do not understand about HUMMER is that it was built and designed to be a great off road vehicle both the H2 and the H3. And they did achieve that! People don't mind hopping onto a HUMMER if they are stranded in high water in Houston. google H.O.P.E. HUMMER Owners Prepared for Emergency's I will say that I am a little bias since I do sell HUMMER's, but I also sell all GMC, Pontiac, and Buick products. So with that being said I choose to have my wife and family in an H3 and I am waiting on my H3T to come in. In closing I would say drive your HUMMER with pride!

I'm old enough to remember the gas lines in 1979. All thought most American cars were dead then and that accelerated the sales of small Toyota's and Datsun's (Nissan). But, the prices of gas came back down a bit and folks went back to buying Trucks, SUV's, Firebirds, Camaro's, etc. Yes, $4 a gallon does seem like alot but, it's cheaper then Europe and eventually the prices will ebb somewhat. Also, salaries will come up in time to compensate. As for me, I'm married, have 3 kiddos, and 2 dogs and live in Texas where everything is 100 miles away. There is no way to pack all that in an econobox and we aren't going to take 12 green cars to all get to some place when we all fit nicely in 1 Hummer!!!

It's hard to believe GM would dump all that work into the H3T just to shut it all down. Notice that the Lousianna plant is not scheduled to be closed. I think it's more likely that they will drop the H2 and continue with the smaller H3 chassis... or that they would sell the whole thing to another company.

AM General may be sold, but since they had Jeep, then American Motors, then Jeep went to Chrysler, GM buys AM General, markets H1, H2 for SUV craze (still built by AM General), H3, maybe they stop for a few years for civilians (probably drive your value up). Nobody is going to replace AM General for supplying the military though, so the HumV and Hummer name will be around probably longer than most of us, as it already has. Wouldn't get worried, all trucks are down 30-45 plus percent this year, it's just not gas, its the economy, people are buying new trucks for work and surely not too many for fun which Hummer would fall further towards for GM. Then, nobody can get a loan. I don't think they are going to let a Middle East company buy AM General though, like Tata buying Range Rover from Ford. Wouldn't be to good of press for GM that they sold our #1 military vehicle manufacturer to the Middle East right now. Hummer isn't hurting GM, there was never a ton of volume during its best year, it's the Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado, etc, that is kicking their revenue, stock price and plants. Probably a good PR move, though not for their dealers, which if I was one I would be pissed at such a loose press release, but their trying to look "green", who isn't. Tundra is also getting their ass kicked. Literally, "ride it out" , have some fun with it, slap a flexfuel or hybrid badge on the back for the tree huggers.

Good points, I would think if you give it a little time Hummer will still be around, not as it once was, but still here. Justin quote:
