MUSCAT — A groundbreaking new ‘Hummer Zone’ was inaugurated yesterday at the Oman Trading Establishment (OTE) showroom in Wattayah for Hummer owners and enthusiasts to experience the ‘can-do capability’ of the vehicle. The Hummer Zone was inaugurated by Terry Johnsson, president of GM Middle East; and Sheikh Saad Bahwan, chairman of OTE, in the presence of other GM officials and the media. The Hummer Zone is the first-of-its-kind dedicated off-road track in the AGCC region to test-drive Hummer vehicles and it has been built exactly to Hummer specifications by OTE behind its showroom in Wattayah. The Hummer Zone is a permanent track that is available to customers to give the vehicles on show the toughest workout in the business. OTE, which is the Hummer dealer in Oman, has transplanted eight heavy-duty obstacles from the wilds to the city to show what the marque is really made of. The super-capable brand is, as they say, ‘Like Nothing Else’, and Hummer Zone guests will find that out on this adventurous assault course. Terry Johnsson says: “We are very excited about the Hummer Zone because it will give our customers in Oman the chance to test the true ability of their Hummers against the tough off-road obstacles and even against the competition.” Sheikh Saad Bahwan said: “This is the first track of its kind in Oman, and we are proud of our execution of the concept. “The Hummer Zone shows our commitment to General Motors and to Hummer as a brand.” The test track first of all consists of the Swiss Mountain, which is essentially three obstacles in quick succession, rolled into the one gruelling Goliath. Demonstrating the stability and clearance capabilities of Hummer’s H2 and H3 models, Swiss Mountain comprises firstly one run of 16-inch vertical steps, followed by a 45-degree side-slope and then a 60 per cent hill climb. Then, visitors to the Hummer Zone can test their wadi-bashing skills by tackling The Twister, which is designed to showcase Hummer’s body strength and the brand’s blue-chip differential lock system. With no respite, Flood Fight comes next. This is the water fjord, and it showcases both Hummer models’ capability to go through deep water, which is no mean feat. Immediately, Boulder Dash follows this, to demonstrate the cars’ ability to tackle rocky terrain – in the off-road business, this is known as rock-rolling. Then, Wood Logs brings the Hummer diff-lock back into play to show how the cars can tackle obstacles on slippery surfaces, while also demonstrating more about Hummer’s legendary power, traction and clearance. And finally, there’s Trench Drive, which brings Hummer’s axle articulation and suspension flex into play on some truly gruelling off-road conditions. Customers can get a feel of what a Hummer can actually do by testing it to the limits at this new Muscat facility. Hummer has had an exponential growth in Oman with sales climbing to more than 300 per cent since 2005 (its first full year of sale). [Times News Service]
