For all you Arizona heads around the Scottsdale area. Thumbnail Image
GM has dug up an obstacle course outside the auction tent to let drivers test the capabilities of the $56,000 Hummer H2 or $30,000 H3 model. It's a different kind of riding dirty that challenges not only the sport-utility Hummers but also the nerves of the driver, starting with a steep hill that would stall most trucks. "I call it blue-sky hill because that's all you see" when the driver reaches the apex, said Jim Ashmore, who runs the test drives for GM. The grade is so steep it feels as if the Hummer H2 will fall backward. But the vehicle takes the hill and other five obstacles in stride. That includes a side berm pitched at 40 degrees, a 20-inch water pit, a rocky trail and a "log walk" that attempts to stump the Hummer. "It will handle just about anything you will encounter," Ashmore said. "You can just about creep up . . . to the edge of insanity." It is free to drive the vehicles at GM's Hummer Experience at WestWorld, northeast of Loop 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. Drivers must be age 21 or older. Children can ride along. GM has two H2 models available, three H3's and a Chevrolet Silverado pickup. Test drives are offered from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday.
