Any of you full time off-roaders break an axle on the trail? That's one of the fears I have doing some serious offroading.

Not personally, but I have seen one break.  The truck had a super-charger, although I'm not sure if that played into effect.
I do carry a variety of parts with me just in case.  The most common things I tend to break are tie rod ends and half shafts. Thank goodness that both can easily be fixed out on the trails.

That would suck! I hope it wasn't far from home or a mechanic

the rear axle of the H2 is, i believe, a unique design made for that truck.  I've read that it hats since been put into the blazer with the corvette motor and perhaps other trucks as well.

All that noted, it is what is called a "semi-floating" axle, and not a full-floating axle.  Full floaters tend to be stronger.  In learning about my truck as i wheel it and everything, about 95% of the anti-H2 propaganda has proven false.  It couldn't be farther from a Tahoe if it tried (they have almost nothing in common.  this misconception originates from a basic misunderstanding of what "platform" means.  A platform isn't a frame, chassis, or moving parts, its just a basic group of trucks that share as much as they can.  In the case of the H2, that's very little.  T-case, frame, suspension, pretty much the works is unique.  The motor, tranny, and diff's are apparently stock GM parts, but my dealer has explained and showed me that basically all of those are beefed up for the H2).

But why the H2 has this semi-floated rear axle when the full-floated GM corporate 14 bolt is prized among extreme offroaders for strength and could have just been put on/adapted, I don't really understand. 


But that said, the 'wheeling damage that i have experienced hasn't involved the rear, but rather the front.  And as Auggie noted, half-shafts and tie rods are fairly simple field repairs.
