I have a few loaded questions for you guys.
1. Where do most of you get you're work done? (dealer, self, local shop).
2.What is the average price paid for gear swap, locker install.
3.If a locked and loaded front diff and or regeared rear diff were offered would you be more likly to regear or install a locker?

I do most of the work myself with the help of some buddies, so I'm not sure what the costs would be installed.

If I could only do one, I would do the gear swap. it helps you less on the trails than the locker, but it makes up for the everyday benefit on the road. Since it's not wise to use the locker full time, you would get much more use out of the gear change. With that said... on the labor standpoint, putting a locker in while doing the gear change is second nature. So do the front locker with a gear change if possible.

I would not recommend a locker in the H3 yet due to the strength issues with the front drive assembly. If you have an 08 H3 Alpha, go for it!! the front axle is cast iron and is much stronger to handle the strain and flex. Eaton is not yet made public the e-locker for the H3 front, however, I believe the Rod Hall Hummer racing team's H3 has one in it and I'm sure it will be out shortly after Full R&D.

On a second note, I have fully documented the H2 Front locker install. I'm planning on publishing under the "How To" section once I'm finished with the Pictures and notes. Stay tuned!

I would choose a locker first before i did a gear swap as i already have put in the cast iron diff. Its at the top of my list.  I am trying to learn to do alot of my own work with the help of friends.  Then what we cant get done I take it back to the shop.

When you received the cast front diff did it come with the carrier in it or was it an empty housing?

I am trying to convince the power above me to offer a loaded front cast iron diff as part of a front locker kit, but we are having a hard time judging how many people are holding off doing a locker becouse of one or several of these reasons.
A. Cost
B. Difficulty in doing or getting the gear swap done.
C. Warranty being voided.
D. Plans to change gear ratio.
My question is if we build it will they come?

My cast iron housing was just the housing we reused the insides there was no need to change them. The reason nobody is putting on lockers in the front  is we cant find one that will fit I have tried quite a few.  Who  ever finds one first is gonna sell a bunch of them. I will be the first in line.

The kits I have fit. They are just gun shy about releasing them becouse of the weak housing problem and we are making a timeout module to turn it off after 3 min. auggie where did you get the housing from?

The housing can be bought at any gm parts counter.  You are wasting your time putting a locker in one with a alum housing it will crack the first time you use it . They flex way too much.

I would be interested in it, but I don't do enough off-roading probably to warant it.  With that in mind, the price is what would cause me to get it or not.  I would guess that a new casing and a locker would be around $1500?  I do most of my work myself, but not sure if I would tackle a gear swap.  I would be nervous about not getting them in right.

The price is going to be the killer im sure. Most of the people I talk to are not comfortable with doing the gear work, which is why im trying to get this kit going. If we can supply the new housing with the gears and locker in it, where all the customer has to do is swap out the front housing and wire it up (with my fancy new harness that shouldnt take more than hour to complete) I am sure a lot more owners would be intrested in getting a front locker no matter what the price is.

Good point! it would be nice to have the whole thing as a pre-installed kit. Iron axle, gear and locker. I would think any axle shop should be able to to put on together if you supply the parts. Just bolt it in and put the old one aside for a spare!

Sorry I can't sell the ones I have, they don't belong to me. The H3 kit will ba a while before it comes out. I am doing the H2 kit first, and we dont have a supplier that will sell us the parts needed to assemble a complete front diff assy.

Good stuff! I think this one will filp the bill because its Limited slip vs open diff. Looks like it handle the stress with the helical gear. Great find!

TracRite® GTL - Helical Gear with Electronic Locking

  • Applied to helical gear limited slip differential
  • Contains all the benefits of the TracRite GT®, plus the full electronic lock capability of the TracRite® EL
  • Smooth, quiet operation in limited slip mode
  • Operational modes: driver selectable, computer programmable or both

You guys that have done a H2 front E-locker do you have pictures of the hole location you used? Did you get H2 specific instructions? Have you seen a good write up on this subject? I dont know if it's becouse they sent me prototype stuff or if this is how they send them out, but they are very vague as far as instructions go.
